We collected and donated school supplies for students and school staff, hygiene supplies, emergency clothing and shoes for our school clothing closet. We prepared the clothing for quick location and use by the school.
We donated snacks and other items for the school nurse and counselor’s offices, tissues, sharpie pens to office staff and encore teachers, and all 62 staff received a note of gratitude with a small Walmart gift card inside.
A small group in our congregation donated a check for the principal’s discretionary fund. The money is used to help pay for taxis and Uber’s for families who have no transportation to school conferences, registration etc.
Flowerpots and plants by each school entrance were spruced up for the start of school by our volunteers. Some teacher wish list items for classrooms were ordered and delivered, and a used full size refrigerator was donated for a work area near kindergarten classrooms. Hand-sewn masks were donated to the front office receptionist at the school, to give to visitors who opted to wear one. Now that the school district has mandated the masks again, we will provide some monthly. The masks are brightly colored and washable, 2 layers.
This year, we are delivering classroom snacks each month on a regular schedule, for all classroom teachers to give out as needed at snack time. The school has added about 100 more children this year, grades K-5, to almost 600 students.
So far, we plan to help in classrooms again on or after September 20. Nineteen teachers in grades K – 4th grade and EC are requesting a volunteer in 30 classes – we will be doing well to fill just over half of those! It is a blessing to be invited into their classrooms and to be able to do that this year. We are so thankful for our congregational support of this program.
