My husband is a REALLY good cook. He loves to grill and has fun trying out new recipes he has seen on one of his favorite cooking shows. I love letting him!
This week he tried a pork burger with pineapple and teriyaki glaze. From the minute he told me what he was cooking, I knew I would not like it. I would not need to wait for even one bite to know this would taste terrible.
All afternoon I smiled in my all-knowing way as he talked about how wonderful it would taste. Me approaching new food combinations is much like many people approaching anything new at church… new can’t be good. New is in the thesaurus of life as the same as bad right?
The thing is the burger was really great! Different for sure, yet all the bizarre combinations complimented each other. It was seriously one of the best dinners he as ever fixed. He deserved a blue ribbon!
What is it about the unknown that makes us so nervous? Sunday School has always been at 10am on Sunday morning even though numbers continue to drop. Do we keep trying the same things each year? Maybe it’s time to explore “school” in new ways.
The pandemic forced us to rethink everything about worship. Many are still thinking outside the box for ways to move forward in new ways. Be open to the possibilities “new” can bring to the comfort of what we know.
Don’t be like me over the pork burger and make up your mind before you have had even the first glimpse of what new looks like. Consider that finding new ways to feed our souls with exciting new combinations, might be the winning recipe for post pandemic worship and growth.
“My friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead. I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done.” – Philippians 3:13-14 CEV
