One morning last week I started the coffee brewing and headed to my favorite chair to begin devotions, Bible reading and meditations. I turned on the lamp beside my chair, there was no light only a humming noise. So I found a new bulb and replaced the humming bulb, now there was a humming noise and light. Somehow that did not seem right or safe… so got another bulb and replaced the humming but giving off light bulb. Finally a light bulb that provided light and did not hum!
As I sat back down with my cup of hot fresh coffee, I thought what lesson could these three light bulbs tell… one that hums but produces no light, one that hums and gives light, and one that silently gives off light.
Several thoughts came to mind–
- the bulb that hums but produces no light could be when a person feels distant from God.
- the bulb that hums and produces light could be when a person feels connection to God and does good things to be seen and heard.
- the bulb that just silently gives off light could be the person who goes about doing good deeds and sharing the love of God, seeking no attention for him/herself, just doing what they are called or feel led to do by the Holy Spirit.
There have been times in my life that I could identify as one of the three bulbs. As have been privileged to work in Lay Servant Ministry, I have seen people who are examples of each of these three bulbs. However, the one that I have seen most often is the third bulb. The person who serves with no desire of gain for self but a love of doing things for others and sharing the love of Christ in the world.
Which bulb are you at this time in your life?
