Swansboro UMC’s partnership with Silverdale Elementary, Onslow County Schools, a Title I,
Covey Leadership school:
Our 6 C4C volunteers could not be present as usual in classrooms this year, but we were able to
help out, along with our entire congregation, anyway! These are some projects we did for the
school this pandemic year, August-present time:
Built new shelving, a buddy bench, painted and restocked our clothing closet at the school for
emergency clothing, for daily school mishaps.
Greeted, helped in setting up entrances and classrooms, prayed for staff and families.
Donated many school supplies, emergency clothing, and classroom supplies in August.
We maintain the clothing closet all year.
Donated hand-sewn, colorful masks for school front office visitors – hundreds of masks…
Donated funds for needed family transportation to and from school (school is rural)
Donated some individual playground items for teachers to use while they could not use the
playgrounds this past fall. School was in-person and hybrid since August; now it will be 5 days a
week.
Connected principal to community zoom meetings.
Opened a remote learning center in church with Y managing.
Donated art/literacy activity bags for all 500 students in December to take home.
Helped to coordinate Manna food gift donations in December.
Provided a staff birthday basket all year (63 staff members) and some snacks for classrooms.
C4C is represented on the school staff’s strategic planning committee.
Congregation donated books for all 500 students to choose and take home. This year, we
donated 1200 plus the school librarian donated 500. Kids were able to take home 3 books
each.
One student exclaimed, “this is just like Christmas!!!”
