ORIENTAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MUSIC/CHOIR DIRECTOR
a) Background and training in conducting, choral, vocal, and instrumental ministries (music degree and experience preferred)
b) Able to coordinate and communicate musical needs between pastor and choirs
c) A thorough knowledge of sacred music, traditional and contemporary
d) Willing and able to work outside by the River for the early service May through October and other special services, to direct music, help set up equipment, and provide technical assistance
a) Able to integrate Christian faith and principles into his/her work as Music Director.

a) Oversees the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services music program.
b) Conducts music for 8:30 am and 11:00 am worship services and rehearsal days.
c) Conducts warm-up session for choirs prior to worship services.
d) Coordinates music for 8:30 am and 11:00 am worship services with the pastor (picks out hymns if pastor so desires). Anthems and special music should be chosen two to three weeks in advance.
e) Selects, prepares, and maintains file of music for the 8:30 am and 11:00 am choirs, ensuring the church is in compliance with all copyright laws.
f) Encourages people to be, and promotes the use of, soloists, duets, quartets, and instrumental groups in the worship services. Encourages children and youth to participate whenever possible.
g) Responsible to, and reports to, the Pastor and the Pastor Staff Parish Relations Committee (hereinafter referred to as PSPRC).
h) In addition to the regular Sunday morning services, the Director will provide for music and direct several special services. Currently these are Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Community Easter Sunrise Riverfront service (when OUMC’s turn), Croaker Festival Community Riverfront Service (when OUMC’s turn), Thanksgiving and Christmas and other special services if the Pastor and Worship Committee request. May be asked to provide technical assistance to Spirit of Christmas Live Nativity and any special musical performances in the sanctuary by, for example, the Pamlico Chorale. The times and places of these services are approved by the Pastor
i) Coordinates any variance in work schedule with Pastor.
j) Serves on Worship Committee as the music representative.
k) Recruits and trains members of the choirs.
l) The Music Director will work with the Pastor to supply to the church office names/ composers/page numbers of music selections for upcoming services in a manner which allows those selections to be included in the bulletins.
m) During the annual budget planning process, the Music Director will submit a budget request to the Worship Committee for items which would benefit the music program. The Music Director will submit his or her requests for continuing education to the PSPR Committee. Those requests then go to the Church Council for final approval.
