As Christians we often put each other into boxes. A young mother joins the church and the Children’s Ministry Team gets excited and starts courting the newest member.
The construction worker joins and the Trustees begin to imagine all the possibilities! Visions of playgrounds, storage sheds, and new structures fill their minds.
We put people in boxes sometimes with very good intentions. We’ve even been known to leave everyone in their designated box for years or even decades. They might even function well in their boxes, but have they grown? Have we?
God creates each of us with unique gifts designed for his glory. What if the woman we boxed into Children’s Ministry was designed by God to help our church get serious about creation care?
What if the construction worker we boxed in on the Trustee Committee was created to lead our church through the difficult work of Dismantling Racism? What if neither of them really understand yet, how God is calling them to serve?
Making sure that every member of every congregation has the opportunity to discover, explore, and use their spiritual gifts, keeps everyone out of boxes! It also helps grow our congregations.
People who feel unfulfilled will leave in search of something that they often, can’t even define yet! They just know something about their faith journey is missing. They know their hearts need more.
Laity are well positioned to get to know each other, to encourage each other, and to support each other in spiritual growth. Get to know each other on a deeper level. Together, talk about the opportunities across the District and the Conference, to find your gifts.
When you see something in someone they may not see in themselves, offer encouragement as they continue on their faith journey.
Our God is pretty creative. Just imagine the ways he could use our hearts… together for his glory. Just imagine if we climbed out of our boxes and discovered what he has designed for each of us. Just imagine a world without boxes.
“The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others.” Corinthians 12:7 CEV
